I had a guess for this storyline a while back (not posted, about the time he was given the project)... I'm waiting to see if I'm right. ...I hope not.

I wonder if this is some sort of command test: let's see if he's got enough to stand up to a higher rank?
I say this from a few juicy stories our Dad told us of his Army days; a few higher ranking officers would test those about to be promoted.
This could be a test to see if our squirrel has the.., nuts for greater command?

Actually, there was no specifications other than 'improve it'. He's actually improved the shape and density.
I still wonder what was the exact purpose of this test...
