Calling them dire wolves would cause unnecessary disabiguation with the real albeit extinct species. They are not a species. They are a blood/personality golem that just happens to take on they physical characteristics of a wolf. We've already established a while ago when Artemis had a dire made of her that it could die without killing its host. That was not unique to Artemis just because of her healing factor.

Why they are all wolf-like is a mystery to the hosts and observers. The dires know but seem incapable of talking about it in ways that can be understood. It would be like explaining Einstein's theory of relativity to an infant.
