Potentially addictive. Doesn't seem to be an exact analogue Terran medication/recreational pharmaceutical, really.

The spores reproduce very quickly. They're kept in tanks where a nutrient rich mist is sprayed on them and they grow pretty quickly. The rations handed out to crewmembers have been killed, although even when the spores are dead they still retain their hallucinogenic properties. In the wild the spores grew in bogs and the hallucinogenic inducing water was pleasant enough that animals would soak in it for the effects and then carry the spores to other pools after spending an hour or so tripping out.

It should be noted that the effects are only active while in the water. So the moment you climb out it fades almost instantly. So there's no darnathi stumbling out of pools tripping out of their eyeballs. The effect is very relaxing though with calm images and colors and sounds. It's something that makes you want to just relax and soak for an hour or so. Think of it like meditation for Darnathi.

And you do not get addicted to things in darnathi society. The empaths in society are trained to remove any addictions from the minds of people around them out of habit the way some people pick up trash in the street.

The Darnathi are very good at adapting things genetically, so the dreamspores in the tanks are in perpetual reproduction mode and are constantly replenishing themselves. The little packets they're distributed in have properties to insure that the spores are dead when handed out, and if a live one happens to survive there's sprays and such to make sure they don't get out of hand.

The fish and such on the ship reproduce quickly as well and much of the ship's waste and sewage is converted into food for the various vats. There is very little waste on a colony ship.

Another question that comes to my mind almost immediately is what happens when there's a release, accidental or not, of something from the ship into Aukate's tropical climate?

No system is 100% secured, and leaks are bound to happen at some point, no matter how good they are at watching or how good their technology is. Could any of their alien stuff (spores, fishes or plants) survive and thrive on Aukate, or even any of the other islands? Their set-up has the potential for a major ecological catastrophe here if what the Darnathi took with them becomes an invasive species on Aukate.

Also, do the spores works on the inhabitants of Aukate? I don't remember seeing it used by any Aukatean (sp?) in the comic, but I do not remember the whole of the comic.
