Do they not have the equipment/supplies to purify the offered food and/or test it for contagion? (that's the impression I'm getting with this somewhat ill-prepared group of Darnathi)
Though they could just not want to take the risk, with what seems to them currently as ample reason.

The vaccines were contaminated by a vengeful crewman... but said crewman was also the medic in charge of determining how the vaccines got contaminated.
