Ok... I'm now really curious as to why Father Mella feels a kinship with Jean Valjean

I have forgotten, what is the significance of the number on Mella's door?
"What would you do for a better world?"

In Les Miserables, Jean Valjean is assigned the prisoner number 24601. Inspector Javert refers to Jean Valjean by that number throughout the musical.
My best guess is that Father Mella was imprisoned for a crime earlier in his life, and reformed. Or possibly Father Mella was enslaved, and rescued by the Church. The former is more likely, though it may be more complex than either of those possibilities. |
